Children's vision accounts for around 80% of all information they receive about the world. These days, with the increased use of technology and digital devices by children, it’s more important than ever that they have a regular eye examination to check their vision and eye health. Some vision problems are not apparent or changes in your child’s vision may be very subtle at first. At Eye See Eyes, we recommend an eye examination for your child before they start school and then regularly at 2-3 year intervals throughout the school years. Eye examinations for teenagers are important too. Often it is during the teenage years that vision problems can become apparent as the school study load increases.
Your child’s eye examination at Eye See Eyes
Our optometrist Leesa Jagers has over 30 years’ clinical experience in testing children and teens for a range of vision and eye health issues. Leesa ensures that your child’s eye examination is conducted in a relaxed and friendly environment, where Mum, Dad or a special carer can sit in the consultation room with their child and discuss any vision concerns. Your child’s eye examination will take around 30 minutes and Leesa will take a detailed vision and general health history and will test your child for visual acuity (how well they can see), how the eyes are working as a team (binocular vision) and whether any eye disorders are apparent. If additional examination using dilating eye drops is required, Leesa will make a follow up appointment for your child. Leesa will measure your child’s prescription to see if glasses are required. Our fabulous children’s eyewear range at Eye See Eyes has something to suit every young face, including prescription sunglasses which are so important in protecting your child’s eyes from UV damage.
Leesa will also discuss good vision habits with you and your child. Children are using smartphones, tablets and computers for up to 8 hours a day rather than spending time outdoors and this is causing an alarming rise in myopia (near sightedness). Myopia can have serious consequences for eye health. Things like eating an eye-healthy diet and getting outdoors to play and away from digital screens and computers are important steps in keeping young eyes healthy.
Teenagers and their vision
A teenager’s life is a busy one. There are study and lifestyle factors which can place a strain on vision. The teenage years can be a time when vision problems become apparent for the first time. We also understand that during this time, image is important. That’s why at Eye See Eyes, we have an awesome range of eyewear for teens and also the option of contact lenses which suit many prescriptions and are easy to use.
There can be some tell-tale signs for your teen – squinting when looking into the distance, complaining of headaches or sore, tired eyes or difficulty completing homework and other ‘close’ tasks all require follow-up with a comprehensive eye examination for your teenager at Eye See Eyes. The other culprit for teenage eyes is too much screen time for both study and socialising. Leesa will examine your teenager’s eyes, check their eye health and prescription needs, recommend options such as glasses, prescription sunglasses and contact lenses and discuss good vision habits to ensure that their vision is the best it can be during this very busy and exciting time of their young lives.
